5 Ways to Take Care of Your Body as well as Your Mind
By Laura Baker
When it comes to taking care of your overall health, it is important to pay attention to your body as well as your mind. Mainstream media has plenty of articles, videos, and other information pertaining to physical health and wellbeing. However, when it comes to mental health, there is little of value out there. Just like you take care of your physical fitness, you also have to invest some time and energy into taking care of your mind. Research even shows a direct link between suffering from depression and poor physical health. Here are a few simple ways to help take care of your body as well as your mind.
- Eat healthy
Since body and mind are so interconnected with each other, when you take care of your body, you are in essence taking care of your mind too. Food is a source of energy for our body including our brain, and eating healthy gives your body all the nutrients it needs to function properly. No matter what you are doing, your brain is constantly working, and as such it needs energy. Therefore, what you eat is going to have an effect on your brain and your mood.
If you love going to the gym and sweating it out, you know how important exercise is to your physical health. You may not know this, but exercise is also beneficial for boosting your mental health. It helps you by raising your spirits, lowering anxiety, and helping you cope with your stress. Exercising regularly also sees to it that you are sleeping well daily – and sleep is extremely important for your mental wellbeing. In fact, problems in sleeping have been linked to various mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
- Take a day to relax
If you have a very demanding job, it is important to take a day to rest and relax, and let go of all the built up stress. It helps if you’ve already taken some time to declutter your home. Slowing down and taking an R&R day is one of the easiest ways of taking care of both your body and mind. How you choose to spend the day is completely up to you, just ensure that whatever activities you choose relax you. If you love being outdoors, you can spend the day camping, or doing Tai Chi, Yoga, playing with your pets or simply meditating. If you are more of a stay-at-home person, read a book or explore your artistic side.
- Develop healthy thinking patterns
For human beings, both good and bad days are a part and parcel of life. Taking care of mental well being does not mean that you always think happy thoughts, and ignore the sad ones. If you truly want to take care of your mental health, you need to deal with things as they are. Instead of procrastinating when it comes to a problem at hand, try to solve it. If you cannot solve it, accept the fact that it is not under your control and move on. Not taking any action is just going to keep increasing your stress, which is definitely not good for your physical or mental health.
- Reach out to your friends and family
Just as it is important to celebrate the good things with your friends and family, it is equally important to reach out to them during difficult times. Talking about whatever is bothering you will definitely help you out – your loved ones may actually be able to help you solve your problem, or give you a different perspective on it. Talking ensures that you are not bottling up anything inside you, which in turn is a good way to take care of your body and mind.
These are simple but effective and easy-to-implement ways to take care of your body and mind at the same time.
